Recommended Places to Dine

Tucson is known for its eclectic Southwestern cuisine, and here are some of our eastside favorites:

Los Pipos
Authentic Sonoran hot dogs—don't be put off by the roadside cart. Order one with everything—they are mildly spicy. And don't forget the Mexican Coke!

Tucson McGraw's Cantina
Steak house, with tasty crunch burger and desserts. Note that service can be slow.

Asian Cafe
Thai food with especially good curry, and Asian Cafe delivers to Civano.

Dakota Cafe. Photo courtesy Dakota Cafe.El Charro Café
Mexican food in a flavorful, colorful atmosphere—order anything with carne seca.

Dakota Café
Southwestern bistro served on a great patio, located next to Trail Dust Town. We like the Waldorf salad and blue cheese burger. After lunch or dinner, drop in some quarters at the shooting gallery next door.

Magpies Gourmet Pizza
Gourmet pizzas and salads. The Greek is good, and Magpies delivers to Civano.

Local Attractions

Some of the most beautiful, cultural, and intellectual places in the Southwest are just a short distance from ZonaGardens. Check out these local attractions while you are in town:

Saguaro National Park East
Located less than four miles from Civano., this park is a great place to have breakfast, take a hike, bird watch, or relax under a ramada in the picnic area and write poetry or paint.

Sabino Canyon
Located within a 30-minute drive, Sabino Canyon epitomizes the diversity of the Sonoran Desert. Accessible to all as it offers both tram rides and walking/hiking trails.

University of Arizona
Located within a 30-minute drive, the University of Arizona offers great sporting, cultural, and academic events, as well as a good collection of restaurants and shopping.

A quick one-hour drive will get you to this absolute must-see for the Tucson tourist. Let us know if you venture out there—we can recommend some good restaurants to stop at along the way.

Tucson Museum of Art
A 30-minute drive from Civano, this museum has a great permanent collection and often highlights a diversity of artists and events. The first Sunday of every month is free.

Arizona State Museum
Located on the University of Arizona campus, this museum brings Southwestern culture to life.

Tucson Botanical Gardens
About half an hour away, the Tucson Botanical Gardens showcases a good collection of native and climate appropriate plants. Buy lunch at the new restaurant, Feast, and enjoy the lovely outdoor eating areas. (Restaurant not open during the hot months.)

Mission de San Xavier del Bac
A little more than half an hour away, this Tohono O'odham mission is also known as the “White Dove of the Desert.” Free admission and parking. Most days the locals offer authentic fry bread in the parking lot—we like ours with chili and cheese. Our daughter likes them with honey and powdered sugar. If you’re there at sunset, hike the small hill to the east of the mission.

Fantasy Island
This nationally and internationally recognized mountain bike trail is just a short ride from Civano. The single-track trail is enhanced with garage art and desert plants and animals. Take the south entrance for a more novice ride, or the north entrance for a more challenging ride.

Southern Arizona Day Trips

Southern Arizona offers plenty of historical, cultural, and environmental destinations. Here are a few we recommend:

Bisbee
Bisbee is a quirky artist hamlet, located about 80 scenic miles away. If you venture there, stop at the St. David Monastery and walk the birding trail for a car break. While in Bisbee, take the Queen Mine tour and eat at Café Roka. For an original experience, visit the Shady Dell RV Park and Campground to see restored Airstreams.

Katchner Caverns is in Benson, about 50 miles from Civano. Take a guided, handicap-accessible tour through some of the best-preserved caves in the world, but call far in advance for reservations.

Tombstone
If you want to wear those new cowboy boots on an authentic boardwalk, go to Tombstone. You can pay to watch several reenactments of the shootout at the OK Corral, or just walk around and brush shoulders with cowboys and saloon girls. For another authentic Old West experience, eat chili at Big Nose Kate’s Saloon and visit the Courthouse. Tombstone is about 60 miles away.

Patagonia, Sonoita, Elgin, and Ramsey Canyon
This scenic valley just south of Tucson offers birding, art galleries, and hiking. This area is sometimes called the Napa Valley of Arizona. In Sonoita/Elgin, there are several vineyards, and some offer wine tasting. It’s a short scenic drive, about 40 miles. While in Patagonia, eat at the Velvet Elvis, then go birding along the Nature Conservancy Preserve, and visit the mission that has been turned into a bar.

Mt. Lemmon
If you want to escape to some cool air, head to Mt. Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains, north of Civano, a lovely drive that can be rewarded with great pie at the Mt. Lemmon Café. Most of the town was burned during a devastating fire a couple years ago, but buildings are starting to go up. Buy fudge at the General Store for fudge, and see the entrance landscaping, which Scott Calhoun designed. You can sometimes ski on Mt. Lemmon also.

Tubac
Tubac is a collection of galleries, specialty shops, bookstores, and restaurants. For a scenic drive, you can get there by driving through to Patagonia and Nogales, and then heading north to Tucson.

Madera Canyon
Madera Canyon, known as one of North America's top five birding locations, is a wonderful spot to take a lunch and hike. It has a slightly cooler climate than Tucson, and has campgrounds and picnic areas.

Nogales, Mexico
This border town offers all the Mexican shopping you would need, just a little over an hour's drive from here. For a special experience, eat lunch or dinner at La Roca, a nice restaurant located within the side of a hill (Roca = rock) on the east end, across the railroad tracks.
